All Park Manager roles are based in the field, living permanently on-site in one of our project areas. As African Parks takes over total management responsibility for its protected areas, candidates with a wide range of management skills and experience are required.
African Parks will consider candidates with a conservation background, onto which at least 5 years of management experience has been added; or candidates with a financial / management background who have obtained 3 - 5 years of exposure to the African conservation or tourism sectors.
Key responsibilities of an African Parks Park Manager include:
- taking total financial and operational responsibility of the park, including preparation of a 5 year business plan and annual budget
- managing a management team that will normally comprise a Financial Controller, Field Operations Manager, Head of Law Enforcement, Community Manager and Tourism / Revenue Development Manager
- overseeing a staff complement that can range from 100 - 200 full-time staff, including active anti-poaching scouts
- liaise with a Board of Directors that is constituted for each project
- building and maintaining relationships with Government or Community partners, and other key stakeholders in the project
- monthly, quarterly and annual reporting to African Parks
- oversight of all financial management and reporting
- oversight of all logistical operations
- oversight of all research and conservation activities in the Park
- oversight of all community activities, including environmental education initiatives with local schools
In the African Parks structure, the Field Operations Manager is primarily responsible for internal operations: anti-poaching operations, conservation and habitat management, and technical / building / mechanical / fencing.
This frees up the Park Manager to focus more on strategic and external issues, as well as financial management. In some parks, tourism and other revenue generation are vital aspects of this external focus.
