Conservation Education Manager, Chipembele, South Luangwa

A vacancy will become available for the Conservation Education Manager for Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust on 1st April 2014. Chipembele is a charitable trust that operates in the area of South Luangwa, Zambia with the primary aim of educating local children about wildlife, the environment and conservation. The Manager teaches lessons and organises activities in conservation clubs in the local schools every afternoon of the school calendar and is responsible for managing a small team of administrators and educators. Accommodation, a classroom and offices are located in the grounds of the local secondary school, so the position is suited to someone genuinely wanting to work in the heart of an energetic rural community. The position is challenging, complex and fairly demanding. It also includes overseeing a Pupil Sponsorship Scheme, tertiary scholarships and school improvement programmes, though these are minor roles.

The four permanent positions - Monitoring & Evaluation, Financial, Investigations Support and Organizational Development officers form a newly created Central Coordination Unit. Positions are based in Nairobi with frequent long missions in Central and West Africa. Salaries are modest.
The EAGLE Network operates in 8 African countries where it carries wildlife law enforcement operations that brought more than 1,000 traffickers to prison.

The Financial Officer is a permanent position in the Central Coordination Unit. His/her monitoring and validation is both monthly and ad-hoc with missions to Member operations as required. Financial and technical inspections are linked because they are used to check the progress and efficiency of projects based on agreed budgets and expenditure incurred.

Niassa Reserve co-management is implemented through a senior management team of the ANAC Reserve Warden and the WCS Reserve Manager - who is also the WCS Project Director. The Warden is responsible for coordination with local, provincial and national bodies, whilst the Reserve Manager is responsible for operations. This requires close coordination and a strong planning, reporting and communications framework. Together, the Warden and Reserve Manager must lead a management team to implement strategies and plans to secure NNR for the long term, and ensure the sustainable use of the Reserve's natural resources.
